Do I really need a TZO client installed?
This answer depends on your network and IP, but for 90% of TZO customers the answer is YES.
TZO's DNS servers will reply with the IP address you have given us, for your domain.
The client is responsible for monitoring your network for WAN IP address changes, and pushes updates to TZO servers.
Static IP addresses and TZO
If you have a static IP address, you do not need a TZO client running at all, and you can simply set your domain record's IP once using TZO Control Panel. The TZO client also supports static IPs, and some people prefer to run the TZO client as it gives them a readout of their domain IP and TZO account expiration date.
Routers that have TZO clients inside
If you are using a router with TZO and you are using that router's TZO support, do not also run the software. You should never use the same TZO key on two clients at the same time.
Running a TZO client on another PC (that is not your server)
TZO clients work by detecting your WAN/gateway address. If you have a client and a server on the same network, using the same Internet connection, then TZO will work the same on either, because the gateway is the same. This is a useful technique for example when you have fine-grained permissions allowing you to add domains on a webserver, but you can not install any software. Another application is to use TZO on Windows, while using an altogether different OS (such as Mac OS X Server) as your main server.
