This article is useful to those who run qmail mailserver on their network, where the link below outlines the 'failure notice' abuse issue nicely. Using the information in the link, it should be possible to defend against spammers who attempt to trick your server into relaying spam (using the 'failure notice' trick, by emailing local mailboxes which do not exist and so get bounced by qmail).
This information is especially important if you use TZO Outbound Mail Relay (OMR), as these 'failure notices' can quickly add up and use your OMR quota. Even if you send mail directly out from a static IP address, this issue should be looked at.
