HP MediaSmart Home Server FAQ

Question: When I connect to my HP MediaSmart server I get an SSL warning. Why does this come up and how can I get rid of it?

Answer: There are 2 types of domain names that TZO can provide for your HP MediaSmart server - one is called an HP Personal domain name - such as MyServer.HPShare.net and the other type is an HP Custom domain, which is YourFamilyName.com - a CUSTOM domain name that you select. Both domain names will cause SSL Security warnings in any browser. If you have an HP Personal domain name, there is no way to get around this warning. In some browsers such as Firefox, you can select to "accept this security certificate permanently". This must be done on each browser. You can also select to upgrade your free HP Personal domain name at anytime to the HP Custom domain name and then purchase and install a security certificate for this custom domain name and the errors will go away once you do this. This is a few step process but the website http://www.MyHomeServer.com has a great step-by-step tutorial on how this can be done. Please goto http://www.MyHomeServer.com and select TUTORIALS and you will find the HP MediaSmart Security Certificate tutorials that explain the steps to get this done.

Question: What is the pricing structure for HP MediaSmart and HP MediaVault customers? Are there discounts for HP users?

Answer: TZO has a partnership with HP to provide DDNS and related services to users of the HP MediaSmart and MediaVault. TZO DDNS was selected since the MS Live Domain Service (comes free with any Windows Home Server) doesn't provide support and TZO offers much more flexibility with SMTP and Domain/DDNS services such as the HP Custom domains offering - it allows you to get YOURNAME.COM for your server. Pricing is as follows (all discounted from the normal TZO retail pricing)

- HP Personal Domains - free first year, then $9.99 per year, no additional fees.

- HP Custom Domains - $24.95 per year for the DDNS, If you already have a domain, you can simply point it to the TZO DDNS servers and just pay for the DDNS service ($24.95 per year)
* Customers with an HP MediaVault can get TZO to LINK a custom domain name to your HP Personal domain name - MediaVaults do not offer a custom domain name option directly in the interface.

- Domain Registration / Transfer - $14.95 per year for domain name registration or transfer. If you already have a domain, you can simply point it to the TZO DDNS servers and just pay for the DDNS service ($24.95 per
year)

- Whois Privacy - $7.95 for one year, 2 years for $15.90, 3 years for $23.85 and so on. Whois Privacy can help protect your domain name registration details from SPAM,Domain Name scams and Identity theft. When you order WHOIS Privacy, your registration details such as your name, address, phone number and other details are hidden to help protect you.

Question: I have an HP MediaSmart server and wish to use Remote Desktop to remotely control the server, How do I do that?

Answer: - By default the Windows Firewall blocks any remote desktop attempt from outside the local area network. If you wish to use the MediaSmart Server for your remote desktop needs, you must change the Windows Firewall settings. Login as Administrator to the Windows Home Server via Remote Desktop, Go to the Windows Control Panel, select Windows Firewall. Click the Exceptions Tab, Select REMOTE DESKTOP, click Edit, then CHANGE SCOPE. Selecting ANY COMPUTER will allow remote desktop connections over the Internet. If you wish to use the TZO DDNS with other applications such as remote desktop, connect to the domain name with the www subdomain. Example: www.Yourname.GotoMyHP.com or www.Yourname.HPShare.net, or if you use a private domain, use www.YourFamilyDomain.com.

Question: I try and PING my domain name on my HP MediaSmart server and get a totally different IP address, what's the problem and how can I fix it?

Answer: TZO provides an HTTPS relay service along with each HP MediaSmart server and depending on what hostname you are attempting to ping, this can cause you to see the TZO Web Relay server IP address. When attempting to perform a PING of your HP Domain name powered by TZO, ping the "www" subdomain name - this maps directly to your WAN IP address of your network where the MediaSmart server resides. If you attempt to ping the root domain name itself, or any other subdomain, you'll get the TZO Web Relay IP address.

Question: I have an HP MediaSmart server but cannot get remote access working. What's the problem and how can I solve it?

Answer: In some cases, the HP MediaSmart server cannot properly open the ports in your router or firewall and port forwarding may have to be done manually. There are also some cases where a "double NAT" (2 firewalls on your network) can also cause the remote access to not work properly. Your ISP may also be blocking the ports needed for remote access to your MediaSmart server. In order to properly diagnose what the problem is you need to perform some tests to help you figure out what's causing the issue. Please goto http://www.MyHomeServer.com and select TUTORIALS and you will find the HP MediaSmart Remote access troubleshooting tutorial that explain the steps to troubleshoot and solve the problem. In most cases it's faulty port forwarding or a double NAT issue. If you determine that your ISP is blocking the ports on their end, MyHomeServer also has a tutorial that explains how to change the ports in your MediaSmart server so you can setup and use an alternate port for remote access. For more details on changing the ports in your HP MediaSmart, please see http://www.MyHomeServer.com and select TUTORIALS to find the port changing tutorial.

Question: I have an HP MediaSmart server and am having trouble logging into the webshare to see my photos. What's the problem and how can I login?

Answer: The HP MediaSmart and MediaVault servers have 2 sets of "users" - one set of users are setup for backups, accessing shared folders, etc. The Webshare uses a DIFFERENT set of users and they can only be added by the administrator and if a user is granted "webshare manager". In order to login to the webshare, you must either be a webshare manager or have been added to the webshare users by the administrator or webshare manager. For more detail on using the webshare locally and remotely, please see this article on the HP Website:
